Stoker 2nd Class Victor Campbell (D/KX 107842) served in the Royal Navy during World War Two. Born on 10th March 1922, he was the son of William Campbell and Agnes Campbell of Ewart's Row, Belfast, Co. Antrim. Victor had 2 brothers who served in the Royal Artillery.
He died on 23rd March 1941 aged 19 years old while serving on HMS Bonaventure. The Dido-class Cruiser went down southeast of Crete after a torpedo attack from Italian submarine Ambra. Bonaventure was en route from Greece to Alexandria, Egypt as part of Convoy GA-8 when it went down. A total of 139 crew members died leaving 310 survivors.
Victor Campbell’s grave is in Protected Section, Plot F, Joint Grave 23 of Capuccini Naval Cemetery, Malta. His headstone bears the inscription:
He giveth his life for his friends. Love’s last gift, remembrance.
