William Cathcart

Rifleman William Cathcart of Kells, Co. Antrim died on 5th August 1943 while with the Irish Brigade as 2nd Battalion London Irish Rifles fought in Sicily.

Rifleman William Cathcart served with 2nd Battalion London Irish Rifles during heavy fighting in Sicily in 1943.

Rifleman William Cathcart (7018987) served in 2nd Battalion London Irish Rifles (Royal Ulster Rifles) during the Second World War. He was the son of the late William Cathcart and Margaret Stewart Cathcart of Kells, Co. Antrim.

His brother David Cathcart served in the Royal Ulster Rifles and his sister was a nurse. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, both brothers worked in Templemoyle Dye Works, Kells, Co. Antrim.

William died on 5th August 1943 while serving with the Irish Brigade in Sicily. His mother received a telegram from the front on 11th September 1943 notifying her of William’s death.

William Cathcart’s grave is in Section III, Row F, Grave 29 of Catania War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy. His headstone bears the inscription:
