Rifleman William Harkness Hamilton of Belfast served in 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles with the British Expeditionary Force in Belgium in 1940.

Rifleman William Harkness Hamilton (7015181) served in 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during the Second World War. He was the son of Robert Hamilton and Christina Hamilton of Belfast.

He died on 16th May 1940 aged 20 years old during fighting in Louvain, Belgium. Soldiers of 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles held the entrance, subways, and a platform of the railway station. Throughout the 16th May 1940 and the surrounding days, the Rifles repelled enemy attack.

William Harkness Hamilton’s grave is in Row B, Grave 9 of Leuven Communal Cemetery, Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium. His headstone bears the inscription:

Fondly remembered by father, mother, and family. “I sleep in peace, my battle won”.
