Fusilier William James Murphy of Killyleagh, Co. Down died in Burma during 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers' advance to Yenangyaung.

Fusilier William James Murphy (6979365) served in 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during the Second World War. He was the son of William James Murphy and Mary Murphy of Killyleagh, Co. Down.

He died on 13th April 1942 aged 23 years old. His Battalion was flown to Rangoon, Burma in March 1942. From there, they set out to destroy oil wells in Yenangyaung. Fighting took place there on discovering Chinese forces had destroyed the wells on 17th April 1942. Japanese troops cut off the troops but several Officers and Fusiliers had already lost their lives in the advance to Yenangyaung.

William James Murphy has no known grave. His name is on Face 11 of the Rangoon Memorial, Myanmar.
