He died on 17th June 1944 aged 32 years old. At the time, his unit had engaged in the Battle of Normandy. Cunningham was mentioned in dispatches for his service in the 1944 campaign.

William John Cunningham’s grave is in Section IIA, Row B, Grave 12 of Ranville War Cemetery, Ranville, Normandy, France. His headstone bears the inscription:
