Petty Officer Telegraphist William John Porter of Annalong, Co. Down served on HMS Warwick when it came under attack off the coast of Cornwall from U-413.

Petty Officer Telegraphist William John Porter (D/JX 146518) served in the Royal Navy during World War Two. Born on 20th February 1920, he was the son of William Porter and Arabella Porter of Annalong, Co. Down.

William died on his 24th birthday on 20th February 1944 while on a submarine hunt on HMS Warwick (D25). U-Boat U-413 fired 2 torpedoes at the British Destroyer about 15 miles from Trevose Head, Cornwall. The stern of HMS Warwick broke off and the ship remained afloat for 4 minutes before the bulkhead collapsed. A total of 3 Officers and 64 Ratings died when HMS Warwick went down.

William John Porter has no known grave. His name is on Panel 88, Column 3 of the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Plymouth, Devon.
