Rifleman William Weir of Belfast died on 29th May 1940 as 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles engaged the enemy in the rearguard of the withdrawal to Dunkirk.

Rifleman William Weir of Belfast fought with 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles as part of the British Expeditionary Force in France and Belgium in 1940.

Rifleman William Weir (7013154) served in 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during the Second World War. He was the son of Henry Weir and Catherine Weir of Belfast.

He died on 29th May 1940 aged 26 years old. His Battalion made up part of the defensive rearguard of the British Expeditionary Force. 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles fended off attacks from the German Army as soldiers made for the coast at Dunkirk.

William Weir’s grave is in Section 1, Row AA, Grave 6 of Bleuet Farm Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. His headstone bears the inscription:

In everlasting remembrance of our dearly loved son. Till we meet again.
