Ohio Street, Belfast

Ohio Street runs between Cambrai Street and Chief Street. The area suffered greatly during the Belfast Blitz and a plaque remembers those who died there.

Ohio Street in the north-west of Belfast runs between Cambrai Street and Chief Street. During the Belfast Blitz of April and May 1941, Luftwaffe bombs rained down on this area of the city causing destruction and a great loss of life.

In 1941, a pair of serving members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary were recommended for awards for bravery. Constable Alexander McCusker and Constable William Brett took part in rescue work at Ottawa Street and Ohio Street.

Belfast Blitz Memorial

On the 75th anniversary of the Belfast Blitz in 2016, Belfast City Council unveiled a number of memorial plaques. A plaque commemorating “75 lives lost” for Ohio Street and Heather Street is on the wall of the Woodvale Community Centre on the corner of Ohio Street and Disraeli Street.
