Between 1976 and 1978, work began on a new stretch of dual carriageway making up a part of the bypass at Newtownards, Co. Down. This road now bears the name of one of the Second World War's most legendary figures.
Robert Blair Mayne, known as Paddy, was born in Newtownards, Co. Down, and first served in the Royal Ulster Rifles. During the Second World War, he became a founding member of the Special Air Service or S.A.S.
