Fusilier James Clarke of Belfast died during the Battle of Normandy while serving in northern France with 11th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers.

Fusilier James Clarke (6984936) served in 11th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers during the Second World War. He was the son of James Clarke and Jane Clarke of 43 Derry Street, Belfast.

He died on 25th June 1944 aged 21 years old having sustained wounds while fighting with 11th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers in Normandy.

James Clarke’s grave is in Section I, Row F, Grave 5 of St. Manvieu War Cemetery, Cheux, France. His headstone bears the inscription:

In memory of our dear son who gave his young life that all might be free.
