Lance Corporal William Hendry (3191396) served in 11th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers during the Second World War. Born in 1919, he was the son of rabbit catcher James Hendry and the late Christina Preston Hendry (née Henderson) of Linton, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, Scotland.
William’s wife Mary Hendry (née McMillan) once lived at 42 Linenhall Street, Ballymena, Co. Antrim. They met while working for the North British Rayon Company in Jedburgh, Scotland in 1939. Mary lived at 65 Parkside, Jedburgh, Scotland and the couple married in Gretna, Dumfriesshire, Scotland in 1939.
11th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers formed in June 1940 and undertook coastal defence operations in Norfolk, England. William died at Cromer District Hospital, Norfolk, England on 4th November 1941 aged 22 years old.
William Hendry’s grave is in 2nd Extension, Grave 707 of Castlewood Cemetery, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, Scotland. A detachment of Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders formed a guard of honour at the funeral, which took place from Riddletonhill Cottages. Reverend G.W.K. Macpherson conducted the service. William’s name features on the North British Rayon Company War Memorial in Jedburgh and on the War Memorial of Jedburgh Old Trinity Church.
